Shocking Medieval Torture Devices

The Astounding Inventions Designed To Cause Maximum Pain To The Unfortunate Victim

What i find incredible when looking at some of these machines is the ingenuity put into the design of the device, the designers must have put hours of thought into their inventions, looking at them now it seems amazing how a human being could be capable of wanting to inflict so much pain and damage on a fellow human, these devices which would look out of place in a current torture horror film were in everyday use at certain times in history.

THE BRAZEN BULL: To my mind this is probably the most heinous of all the devices designed for torture that will be mentioned here, the Brazen Bull was a huge bronze statue that was hollow inside, the victim would normally have their tongue removed before being placed inside and the hinged doors would be shut, fires would be lit below the bull, as the victim felt the searing heat inside, the crowd watching would hear the muted screams from the victim appearing as if the bull was alive. Legend has it that the device was invented by an evil minded Greek by the name of Perillus for a particular tyrannical leader named Phalaris of Agrigentum, Perillus expecting a great reward for his sick invention deservedly became its first victim, after mistreating his subjects the tyrannical Phalaris also eventually found himself inside the nightmarish bull

THE RACK: One of the better known torture devices the Rack was used throughout medieval Europe, it was a particular favorite of the Spanish Inquisition. The basic Rack consisted of a mechanical device where all four limbs would be tied with ropes then a crank or turning wheel would be turned to then stretch the victims limbs, sometimes other tortures would be added to increase the pain, for example a fire would be lit below the victims body, in one particular case, a young christian boy, the fire below was only extinguished by the boys dripping blood as his limbs were torn from his body!

THE IRON MAIDEN: In the 1800s a version of this device was found in Nuremburg in Germany with documentation that proved its use, until this time the device was considered to be so evil and fiendish it was believed to be fictional. The Iron Maiden was an upright sarcophagus with spikes fitted to the inside of its doors, the victim would be put inside and then the doors would be closed. The spikes would be long enough to pierce the victims major organs, including two spikes that would pierce the eyes , but short enough not to cause instant death, the victim would suffer an agonizing death that would take several hours.

THE BREAST RIPPER AND THE PEAR OF ANGUISH:  Some torturers would take particular delight in the torture of women, the tortures being especially designed to destroy the victims femininity. The Breast Ripper was a claw shaped device that was used to pierce the breast, the woman was normally tied to a wall then the Ripper was torn from the breast tearing the breast to pieces. If having breasts torn to pieces is not bad enough, the Pear of Anguish offered even more painful humiliation. The pear shaped device consisted of four metal leaves joined by a hinge that could be opened by a crank, the device would be inserted into the vagina or anus of the victim and then opened ,causing massive internal damaged.

The Breast Ripper

The Pear of Anguish

THE SCAVENGERS DAUGHTER: This apparatus consisted of a loop of iron with a hinge placed in the middle, the victim would be forced to crouch on top of one half of the loop while the top half of the loop was pivoted over the top of the victims back. The torturer would screw to tighten the loop further and further crushing the victim into an involuntary crouch, the spine would be dislocated and ribs would crack, eventually blood would gush from the hands and face. This torture was a favorite of Queen Elizabeth 1, foisted on Protestants accused of treason.

THUMB SCREWS:  A well known torture, not designed to kill but just to cause maximum pain. The traditional thumb screw consisted of three upright metal bars into which the thumbs were placed, a horizontal wooden bar was then screwed down slowly until the thumbs were crushed. These devices were initially used by the Russian Army as a punishment for misbehaving soldiers.

Thumbscrews

THE BOOTS: This must have been one of the most painful tortures of all, the victims legs were bound together between two planks of wood and bound with cords, wedges of wood would be placed between the cords which the torturers would then hammer, each time shattering a piece of bone. When the cords and planks would finally be removed, the victims legs literally would be a bag of bones.

THE HANGING CAGE:   The unlucky victim was usually placed in the cage naked and left open to the extremes either hot or cold, the victim would starve to death or die of exposure, this could take weeks.

IMPALEMENT:  Not much brain power was needed to invent this torture it was simplicity itself. The unfortunate victim would be impaled to the ground by a lengthy spike which would pass through the victims posterior an exited through the mouth, incredibly the victim could last for more than a day in this state.

THE SAW:   The attached picture tells the whole story with this one.

It seems amazing today to see images of some of these devices that were used for torture in the past. Who enacted the torture? What sort of mind could invent or commit such atrocities?
Be thankful you were not born in medieval times.

The Walking Dead

I feel like a kid waiting for Xmas, because tonight sees the return of my favorite television series in a long while, The Walking Dead. This series is awesome and just keeps on getting better. The good news is that we are only half way through the third series which relates to around issue number 30 in the comic book, i think , being that the comic book is now up to issue 107 there is tons of material to work with to make series after series of this popular show, i believe it was Robert Kirkman the writer of the comic who said that it is going to take at least seven series to tell the whole story. Great!

KILLER CLOWNS AND EVIL PUPPETS

CLOWNS, PUPPETS, DOLLS, WHAT COULD BE SCARIER?

I have had a lifelong hatred of all three,  Puppets, Clowns and Dolls can strike fear into many adults?  Strangely all three are associated with childhood and having fun . How much fun do you think this guy is?

"I'm every nightmare you've ever had. I'm your worst dream come true. I'm everything you ever were afraid of. "

According to WIKIPEDIA : Coulrophobia is an abnormal or exaggerated fear of clowns. .., i would suggest there is nothing abnormal about it. Pupaphobia and Autonamatonophobia are closely related , the fear of puppets and ventriloquists dummies respectively. Imagine spending a night in a room with a ventriloquists dummy sat in the corner of the room, just staring at you, could you take it? What if you thought it moved? Would you run from a lump of plastic and wood?
Even this little chap would scare the life out of you in the dark!

I'm going to eat your brains!

Dolls or puppets that come to life have long been a staple horror film favorite, The Puppet Master movies, Demonic Toys and of course Childs Play are well known in the genre. If film makers so often choose to use these subjects as objects of terror, there must be something in the human psyche that holds a long standing fear at the anthropomorphism given to some plastic and wood.
"Hey, I'm Chucky and i'm your friend to the end."

Of all the dolls that have featured in horror movies, my all time favorite is the Zuni Doll that comes from the third section of the film Trilogy of Terror, the doll is bought by Karen Blacks character Amelia as a present for her new boyfriend who has an interest in anthropology, little does she know that the doll contains the spirit of an evil Zuni warrior " He who kills ".  This section of the film   which is written by Richard Matheson ( Incredible Shrinking Man, I am Legend ) has become something of a cult classic.

Sweet dreams

LEVITATION

Is possible for a body to levitate?
Is it possible to hover above the ground unsupported by ropes or a platform?

It has been claimed for thousands of years by practitioners of many of the worlds religions that levitation is for real, in the christian religion there are numerous accounts of saints who it is claimed could levitate, in the bible it is written that Jesus walked upon Lake Galilee. The Hindus believe that levitation is possible by mastering the Hindu discipline of Yoga and levitation is a staple belief within the teachings of Buddha.

In the 19th century it was quite common in a seance to see the medium levitate, the vast majority of  these acts however were proved to be frauds using wires and stage magic tricks to produce the illusion.
One gentleman famous for his levitation skills was Daniel Douglas Home. Homes' skills in levitation became legendary in a career that lasted 40 years, it has been claimed that Home would often disappear out of one window and come back in the room through another!

It is very likely that levitation is just a trick, although sometimes a very clever one.

Here are two videos i found on youtube, the 1st shows a man walking with his dog in a Russian forest stumbling upon a young girl seemingly levitating way above the ground, this is very cleverly done, in the second a Buddhist monk shows off his levitation skills, in this one though i do wonder why he sits with his back to the curtains, still an interesting video

Time Travel For Real - Time Slips

Imagine you were given the chance to get into a time machine and travel back to the past, time travel has long been a staple subject of Science Fiction movies and stories, but is it possible that people have found themselves in a different time period to their own? Unwittingly traveling into the past, finding themselves in strange surroundings which they have only seen before in old films or the history books? There are a surprising number of accounts from people who claim to have experienced just that.

In Liverpool, England there is a street, Bold Street, where there have been numerous reports  of time slip events, most of the accounts concerning Bold Street involve witnesses finding themselves in the Liverpool of the 1950s or 60s. A young lady once found herself chatting to a gentleman on a bench while she enjoyed her lunch, thinking that the man was dressed very smartly, albeit very old fashioned for modern times, his suit looked more suited to the 1950s, she was surprised to find that the gentleman had disappeared just after she had turned around for a second to throw her sandwich wrapper in the bin. One man while walking past St Lukes church, near to Bold Street, was astonished to see the church lit up and complete with roof, the church had been pretty much destroyed to rubble during the Liverpool blitz during the war, naturally the man thought that St Lukes had received some extensive renovation, a few days later the man revisiting the street found the church back to how he was normally familiar, derelict.
Marty fetch the De Lorean

One of the more well known time slip events occurred in France in October 1979, two married couples the Gisbys and the Simpsons traveling through France on their way to Spain stopped en route in a very old fashioned hotel. The couples who did not speak any French were perplexed how everyone they met at the hotel seemed to belong to another era including the local Gendarme, the windows of the hotel contained no glass, even the cutlery seemed archaic, despite this the couples enjoyed their stay and were even more pleased with their bill of only 18 francs! When returning on the way back to England the holidaymakers decided to stop at the strange hotel again, only to find after searching for several hours that they were unable to find it. Photographs they had taken of the hotel turned out blank, even disappearing from the negative.

In December 2004 an American couple Mark and Julia set out to discover the Catskill Mountains. After taking random roads and driving round aimlessly the couple found themselves lost and to make matters worse it began to snow, heavily. Seeing lights shining in the distance they headed towards them and found themselves in a very curious looking Gas Station, the station had non of the products for sale that one would associate with a modern station, just some Coke that was in bottles and some Hershey bars that bore a strange label. They were soon approached by an attendant who asked if their "fancy" truck needed filling up, normally at this time Mark was paying $50 to fill up his tank, the cost on this occasion was $2.85 , the attendant apologized for the high price explaining it was due to the war! When returning to to try to find the Gas Station a few days later it could not be found

So have people really traveled back in time and experienced life as it was then? Accounts like these are often described by the witness as dreamlike, trees and buildings are described as being flat and unrealistic as if they have been painted. Could it be that the experience is some sort of mass haunting? Whatever the explanation for these events the persons that have experienced them feel sure of there reality and perhaps there are parts of the world which can act as a portal to another time or place or maybe dimension.

BIGFOOT AND OTHER APEMEN

During my time at university i studied Anthropology and in particular Paleo-Anthropology the study of ancient man, it was  from these studies that i developed an interest in the so called Man Beasts that are part of folklore in many parts of the world and in particular i gained a life long interest in reports about Bigfoot or Sasquatch.
Other hairy ape men are reported throughout the world,  the most well known of these is the Yeti or Abominable Snowman as he is sometimes known of the Himalayas, being as the Yeti lives in such a remote place its not surprising there is a far smaller amount of evidence for this creature as  there is for Bigfoot, evidence for the existence of Yeti  mainly comes in the form of photographs of footprints, some hair samples that apart from one sample  came from bear or goat and a very small number of eyewitness accounts, however some symbolic paintings of the Yeti where discovered at Tengboche Gompa in the Himalayas between Everest and Kachenjunga in 1954 showing that the locals had had legends and belief in these creatures since ancient times. The Yeti has only been captured on film once and that proved to be a fake, the footage known as the “Snow Walker Film” was created by the Paramount network for their show Paranormal Borderland and later used by the Fox Network in a show about the greatest hoaxes of all time.

Probably the best known footage of Bigfoot so far recorded is what is known as the Paterson / Gimlin Film
                                                                                       ,
Arguments have raged for many years over the authenticity of the Patterson footage, is it for real or a guy in a monkey suit, surprisingly opinions among experts are completely split, many experts claim that the size of the creature and its movements, gait etc would be impossible for a human being to reproduce, the more skeptical experts point to the circumstantial evidence, Patterson at the time was in the process of making a documentary about Bigfoot and for him to just stumble upon the creature the way he did all seems a bit too coincidental, this footage remains though the most well known and controversial evidence of the existence of Bigfoot, my favorite evidence of the creature is this video known as the New York Baby footage, this films purports to show a young Bigfoot swinging in some trees in the background of the film, if nothing else it is very strange that what looks like a young ape would be loose in a New York park!

In all the reports of sightings of Bigfoot or Yeti its probably fair to say that the cryptid is described as being more ape like than human but in descriptions of the Russian and Asian Ape-man, the Almas, this cryptic being bears far more resemblance to the popular image of a caveman than any ape. There are many accounts and stories of this legendary hominid across Central Asia and Russia, there is even an account of an Almas being raised in a Russian village and having a child with one of the villagers! Descriptions of Almas usually entail a very human like creature covered in a large amount of hair with a protruding brow ridge, rather like what can be seen on the skulls of Neanderthal Man remains, this has led to some scientists and crypto-zoologists to suggest there may be, or has been a group of Neanderthals that have survived into modern times, a not so unbelievable hypothesis as not so long ago in mans past we would have shared the Earth with our Neanderthal cousins, and maybe even interbred with them,  as Neanderthals died out relatively recently in Earths history its not beyond the realms of possibility that a few survived.

A reconstruction of a Neanderthal
Legends of man like creatures exist throughout the world, from Bigfoot in the USA, Sasquatch in Canada, Yeti in the Himalayas to Orang Pendek in Malaysia and the Yowie in Australia, even the UK has had a couple of hairy man sightings in the past, it would be wonderful to think that a being closely related to man and yet to be classified, still survives in the world somewhere.

THE NOTORIOUS SPRING HEELED JACK

   WAS HE HUMAN OR DEMONIC?

Spring Heeled Jack Evades A Pursuer

One of the strangest unsolved mysteries of Victorian London  is the curious case of Spring Heeled Jack. Various witnesses attributed Jack with the ability to leap tremendous heights and he was described as having a terrible and frightful appearance, clawed hands and eyes of red fire, he wore an oilskin suit with a black coat and facial helmet and leaped from nowhere to confront his unfortunate victims.
The first claimed sighting of Spring Heeled Jack was by a business man in 1837 who, when returning home from work late one night  was confronted by a muscular man who jumped from the high railings of a cemetery wall to land in his path, although no attack took place Jack was described as having devilish features including a pointed chin, long pointed ears and nose and glowing eyes and thus the urban legend of Spring Heeled Jack was born. Later in 1837 Jack was to appear twice more, Mary Stevens a servant girl was returning to her workplace at Lavender Hill via Clapham Common when a strange figure attacked her in an alleyway, the attacker who held her in a tight grip ripped her clothes with his sharp claws and kissed her face, the attacker fled when in a  panic she screamed loudly, the very next day however Jack was to appear in front of more than one witness when he jumped down in front of a horse drawn carriage causing the coachman to lose control and crash, this led to him being seriously injured , several witnesses saw Jack escape by jumping a 9ft wall cackling with laughter as he fled.
The most notorious accounts of Spring Heeled Jack were related by two teenage girls Lucy Scales and Jane Alsop. On the night of February 19th 1838 Jane Alsop answered the door at her fathers house to a stranger who claiming to be a policeman begged her to bring a light saying they had caught Spring Heeled Jack in the lane, once she handed a candle over to the stranger she noticed he wore a large black cloak which he then threw back revealing his true hideous appearance, he vomited blue and white flames and his eyes resembled red balls of fire, Jack attacked Miss Alsop with what she described as metallic claws , ripping her gown, she managed to scramble away but Jack caught her and only fled when he was disturbed by Miss Alsops sister. Eight days later 18 year old  Lucy Scales was returning with her sister from their brothers house when they spotted a person standing at an angle in a passage, as they neared the man he bounded in front of Lucy spitting blue flame in to her face, after hearing screams the brother ran from his house into the passage to find Lucy suffering a violent fit being comforted by his other sister, The Times reported this case as The Late Outrage at Old Ford.
Numerous accounts of Spring Heeled Jack were reported throughout the 1800s, not just in London but throughout the length and breadth of England and even in Scotland, in one instance in 1877 Jack was seen at an army barracks in Aldershot, a sentry being alerted by a figure who bounded towards him making a metallic sound, the soldier challenged the stranger who leaped in front of him slapping him around the face several times with icy cold hands, after hearing a commotion several men rushed to the place but Jack eluded them by jumping several feet over their heads and landing behind them. In Lord Ernest Hamiltons memoirs written in 1922 he recalls that the events at Aldershot were not peculiar to there and that similar events had occurred the year previously when his regiment had been based at Colchester, Hamilton recalled how sentries were ordered to shoot on site if Jack was spotted.

A more recent report of a possible sighting of Spring Heeled Jack was related by a traveling salesman who claimed that in 1986 while on a road in South Herefordshire a man jumped over him with an inhuman bound and slapped his face, the salesman described his attacker as wearing a black ski suit and who's face had an unusual elongated chin.

So who or what was Spring Heeled Jack? Was he a man, alien, demon or just a hoax? In 1838 the Lord Major of London John Cowan revealed that he had received an anonymous letter claiming that a group of gentlemen had had a wager where a nefarious character of their acquaintance would try to scare members of the public dressed in disguise as either a bear, a ghoul or a devil although if this were true it could account for some of the reports it is unlikely that one hoaxer could appear at so many locations over such a long period of time, at one point the finger of suspicion was pointed at the Marquis of Waterford an Irish nobleman known for his lewd and drunken behavior and his fondness for drunken pranks.
The Marquis of Waterford

The Marquis however  had an alibi at the time of the attacks on Jane Alsop and Lucy Scales and even after his death from a riding accident in 1859 the reports of Spring Heeled Jack continued. If Jack was indeed a hoaxer or several hoaxers that have copied others exploits over the years, the fact that Jack was reported as being able to leap over great heights is not easy to explain, some skeptics have suggested that Jack really did have mechanical springs in his heels, when experiments were carried out by the German military during the Second World War to fit soldiers with spring heeled boots all the test subjects were left with broken ankles so that also seems unlikely. Some of the more stranger explanations of Spring Heeled Jack have claimed that he was an extraterrestrial , or a demon summoned by occult practitioners of the time.

Entities similar to Jack have been reported from other parts of the world , in the Czech Republic a similar figure known as the Spring Man of Prague became a folklore hero and starred in a series of comic books fighting the Nazi SS.  In Houston Texas in the USA a figure was reported as being sighted in a pecan tree by three witnesses who described a character dressed in a black cape , tight fitting pants and quarter length boots. There are similarities between Jack and some other mysterious  legendary entities such as The Mothman of the USA and The Owlman of Cornwall and Jack is very similar in appearance to the Japanese thunder god Raiden, although Raiden legends claim he was a predator of men who devoured them eating them through their navels!
